A businessman car repairer, Alhaji Abba labaran Kwalbet has accused men of the Nigeria Police Force NPF Police tactical squad for allegedly unlawfully arresting, detaining and extorting money to the tune of over two million naira from him.
Counsel to the Victim Barrister Hassan Saraki demand for justice wrote a petition to the Inspector General of Police over the incident Abba alleged that the suspected policemen collected N500,000 from him for his bail and they withdrew 1,500,000 using his ATM without his permission after they forced him to tell them his ATM Pin number, they also collected additional N150,000 from him apart from the initial N190,000 they removed from his pocket immediately after he was arrested.
In his account of the incident today sunday in Bauchi the victim Abba told newsmen that on may 27, 2024, around 12 noon pm, some policemen came to his shop at Yankari Workshop Bauchi arrested him and took him to Bauchi State Police Command.
The commissioner of Police said they will not accept him until they came with a permission from Police Headquarters that they came to Bauchi to carry out investigation, they moved the suspect to Yelwa Division the Divisional Police DPO office they showed a letter to the his colleagues and lawyers visited the DPO and demanded to know his offenses or they should release him on bail.
They asked them to come back tomorrow by 10:00am 0 clock, but they moved him to Jos Plateau State Command C Division as early as 6am the following day.
According to him, while on their way, the policeman told him that a suspect that stole three vehicles belonging to the Inspector General of Police wife who was arrested had mentioned him as a person who bought the stolen vehicles and cut them to pieces.
“When we got to the station, they locked me they later tied my leg on the mango tree my head was down and beat me severally that i must accept that i am the one who bought the three stolen vehicles, but i didn't accept and demanded to see the suspect that mentioned my name, they said the suspect is in Abuja if they take me to Abuja they will kill me."
“They said that now they pity me but i must asked my family to bring N500,000 to them cash to secure my bail and i must pay the small one among the three stolen vehicle cost N1,500,000 and there was 150,000 legal fees since they collected my ATM card and forced me to tell them the pin they withdrew N1,500,000.”
“After they collected all this they refuse to release my wrist watch and the valuable rings they removed from my hand and told they are exhibits.”
Lawyer to the victim Barrister Hassan Saraki said they had already written a petition to the Inspector General of Police and their petition received petition and thanked the Bauchi State Police Commissioner Awwal Musa Mohammed for the fatherly role he played which led to the easy identification of the policemen that beat the victim.
He urged the Inspector general of Police that they expect Justice from him, failure which they will be left with no option but to seek for redress in court but for now they are waiting for the outcome of the police investigation.
